How I got conned by a Zimbo Bolt driver in JNB

I am a Zimbabwean transited through Johannesburg in the past few days and got conned by Zimbo Bolt taxi driver. As I had a layover of  about 18 hours it was clear for me: First I needed to get a taxi from the airport to Ecohotel, sleep over night and find my way back to the airport around 10:00 on 11 Jul 2021. Having succeeded at the first task, I asked the reception how to get a taxi to take me to the nearest mall so I could have a decent breakfast at the Mugg & Bean (zvangu zvekuda zvinhu). She told me that I had to download the Bolt App which would locate a genuine, and reasonably priced ride. The app is slightly complex, collecting both telephone and bank details. With the help the receptionist, a slim lady of warm spirits, I managed to identify the number belonging to the sim card I had purchased from the airport. Then I also entered the details for my Visa card. In few minutes I was waiting for my ride which was being driven by a verified driver, whose I immediately knew was from Zimbabwe because of his signature name. I was happy for this: A Zimbo taking me around was the last thing I had imagined. After a short ten minutes the car arrived, and the app started beeping frantically to alert that my ride arrived. I hoped in, and we chatted as we drove to the nearby mall. He educated me how Bolt was a good thing. When we arrived at Mugg & Bean and learnt that I could only order take-away, I elected to remain and see how it would work out. Little known to me is that my Zimbo driver had left but not ended the trip. As I was paying by card the app continued to charge me while I waited for my meal. I only stopped the trip once I had my take-away and decided that I would order another ride to the airport. Initially I could not order another trip as I was still in my Zimbo guy's trip. As a result, I paid ZAR54 instead of ZAR21. But musadaro vanhu wee! Ndakabirwa guys.

  1. I just came across your blog I am sorry about your experience but here are a few tips
    1. Use Uber not bolt (bolt has a lot of loopholes and some of their drivers are shady. They won't address your complaints should you have any. Many people have had horrible encounters with bolt so always go for uber although the ride might be R2 more)
    2. You don't have to put your card details. Always opt for paying cash. Many drivers don't end the trip and you get charged ridiculous amounts. Also many people have had bolt charge them 2 or 3 times for a trip.

Half time is hardly time to hang one's boots: ZimElection 2018

The elections have come is all that one can say regarding the Zimbabwe harmonized elections of 2018. The 'and gone' part is hard for the main parties involved. Zanu pf have accepted victory with president tweeting that he was humbled by the support of the zimbabwean people. Several foreign politicians including Juluis Malema, Cyril Ramaphosa, Lungu of Zambia have already tweeted their congratulatory messages. However Zanu pf aligned varakashi on social media have not yet moved on. They are still engaged in a seemingly more heated rakashing than before. Making one wonder why. Are they  somehow aware that for the MDC and for the majority of Zimbabweans it is not over so they are somehow trying to run a counter intelligence campaign? Are they more aware of the challenges that riddled this election that they can see how easily what they say they have may be reversed soon? There are many more questions one could ask but what remains is that even Zanu varakashi are not hanging their ...
